Business case: This feed mill did it! Safe cost-effective Salmonella reduction
Poultry feed is difficult to decontaminate. A feed miller was looking for alternatives to formaldehyde in order to control Salmonella in layer and breeder feed. The feed miller tried using a gentler method based on organic acids.
Auditing is key
A full Salmonella audit was performed in the entire production system. Samples were taken from dusty spots like sieves, inside of machines and also from the raw materials.
A complete feed safety programme
Together with hygiene advice and dosing equipment, the feed additives of the Selko Fysal range were applied. They were used in whole grains, the grinder and in the mixer. The high level of active ingredients in Fysal assured efficacy despite the high buffer capacity of the feed.
This practical example shows, with a strict control programme, regular expert checks and interventions, it’s possible to reach less than 10³ CFU Enterobacteriaceae without the use of formaldehyde.
Enterobacteria, such as Salmonella, can be present in raw materials and final feed, an undesired situation because of the possible effects throughout the feed-to-food chain, including at slaughter house and consumer level. Controlling Salmonella in raw materials reduces cross-contamination.

Raw material treatment
Fysal is a synergistic blend of organic acids and their ammonium salts, which may reduce enterobacteria like Salmonella in raw materials, with a long-lasting effect. The acids in Fysal are partly buffered, making them less liable to evaporate, and since they stay active over a longer period of time, this may reduce recontamination of feed and raw materials—a clear benefit compared to other treatment strategies. Preservation of feed for reproductive animals
Raw materials like soybean meal and canola (rapeseed) meal are known risk factors for Salmonella contamination in feed. However, Salmonella control is difficult in these materials because their high buffer capacity means that significant doses of chemicals are needed to adequately reduce the enterobacteria. For example, layer feeds are not normally pelletised and have increased buffer capacity due to high levels of calcium carbonate.

Feed Safety programme: analysis of Salmonella contamination
The Selko® Feed Safety programme includes a Feed Safety audit at the feed mill (monitoring, analysis, serotyping), as well as advice on product application, hygiene and management.
During the Feed Safety audit, the Selko specialist will analyse feed safety by taking samples of the raw materials from all the critical control points (CCPs) of the production process. The main purpose of the audit is to analyse the origin of contamination. In the event of Salmonella, positive samples will also be serotyped to track down the cause of contamination. Product application advice means that the best product is chosen according to the audit, the specification of the feed and the production process. Selko® E-300 continuous dosing system
The Selko E-300 is an on-belt or on-conveyor continuous dosing system for treating raw materials. Spray nozzles ensure that Fysal is evenly distributed throughout the feed to control enterobacteria during storage.
